Pocket Magneto and Tappet spanners - Includes Terry Spanners

Pocket spanners were produced for the motorcyclist to repair their bike out on the road

There were a number of types produced

1) Terry were a manufacturer of accessories of all types.

There is a copy of a Terry catalogue at Terry Catalogue This catalogue includes the following two items

a) Terry Magneto spanner BA series
BA is short for British Association screw threads which were small screw threads. Wikipedia has a good description see link BA threads


 





 Spanner set is clearly marked
"Terry"s RgNo673876 Spanners"
Each spanner is marked with BA size
the smallest being 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, the largest.
The 6, 7, 8, are marked on the reverse side to the 1-5


 The larger three , 6 (smallest of the three), 7 and 8 (largest)
 The only other mark is "Made in England"
It also come with screwdriver
 
 and feeler gauge













b) Terry Tappet spanner

 These came in
0BA 1BA
2BA 3BA

This one is 4BA & 6BA











2)  H.T.& S magneto spanners

This has the army arrow and 1944



Sizes 8, 6, 4, 2, 0
 
 
3) BTH Magneto spanner

  1. I have a set of the 8 leaf spanners number 1 to 8. I don't think they are all BA sizes. Also 10 is the smallest BA size with lower numbers being bigger.

    1. Hi Ed yes I think you are right. I agree the bigger the BA size the smaller the spanner. The number isn't related to the actual size. The measured size of the 8 is 7.5mm. so it is not mm nor is it 8/16 or 8/32 which were other options (7.5mm works out at 9/32). So now not sure what it is measuring

  3. BA Spanner sizes are not the same as magneto spanner size. Just compare a No3 magneto spanner to a 3BA- not the same.

  4. Came here wondering what the sizes on these spanners were. As many questions still as answers still! :-) They don't seem to match any particular size, which is weird in itself.
